How do you clean the float rooms?
Our float rooms are meticulously cleaned, maintained, and sanitized in multiple facets to produce the highest quality float experience. A filtration system, more powerful than any used in swimming pools or hot tubs, runs after each session. There is 1200 pounds of medical grade Epsom salt dissolved in the room – a concentration so high no living microorganism can survive. In addition, an ultra-violet light sterilization system is used. UV is the safest most effective system available and uses the same technology as water purification systems used for drinking water. We also use 3% Hydrogen Peroxide solution at the end of each night, which inhibits the growth of bacteria. Water is filtered seven times after each use and nightly for 3 hours. Clients are required to shower before entering the float room. We take every precaution to provide you with the cleanest, safest and most relaxing experience possible. We are members of the Float rooms Association (FTA) and adhere to their stringent regulations concerning water sanitization and filtering.
Why try floating?
The float room is a very unique and effective tool. The decrease in stimuli and anti-gravity sensations leave the body feeling refreshed and rejuvenated due to natural endorphins released from the brain. Scientific research and client testimonials show that floating on a regular basis can have dramatic results in lowering stress and repairing the body.
Are there any negative side effects of floating?
There are no known negative side effects of floating. All the effects and benefits of REST (Restricted Environmental Stimulation Therapy) are wholly beneficial. Floating is the safest, fastest, easiest means to achieve a profound improvement in the quality of life for individuals.
How often should I float?
We hear general claims from first-time floaters that it is the most enjoyable experience they have ever had. Generally speaking it takes 3 – 5 float sessions before an individual’s becomes fully acclimated to the float room environment. It takes several sessions to release the years of accumulated stress and tension in your body so that one can begin to restore and optimize itself. The law of diminishing returns does not apply to floating. Each and every time you float, the parasympathetic response is triggered. Regular floating produces cumulative positive effects. The frequency of floating is an individual preference. Individuals with high-pressure lifestyles (business people, athletes, performers, professionals) may wish to float a few times a week to keep themselves healthy and in an overall state of well-being. Similarly, individuals with special demands such as starting a new job, training for a sporting event, studying for an exam, recovering from illness, injury, and pregnancy would benefit from floating sessions. We offer many float memberships and packages to fit every need.
What if I’m claustrophobic?
Being in the float room is more like floating in outer space. You’re always in control of your environment, and even people with extreme claustrophobia have reported having no problems with their time in the chamber. We pride ourselves in providing an environment in which all guests can be comfortable experiencing flotation therapy. Guests are in complete control of their float room door, which may be left open, partially open or closed. (Note: it can get chilly if the float room door is left open.) Each float room features a LED light which is in the total control of the guest. A selection of music options—including the option to bring your own music are available for each session. If you have any questions or concerns, please don’t hesitate to ask your Float Consultant for assistance! Know that there are no expectations for your float. You are more than welcome to float with the door open and lights on the whole time if you please. Even when closed, the door is not locked, and you can easily open it and come out at any time. You are in total control the entire time.
What if I fall asleep in there?
Some people fall asleep, but the water is so buoyant that you stay afloat. The worst that can happen is getting woken up by a bit of salt water in your eyes.
What if I can’t swim?
There is only 10 inches of water in the chamber. In addition, the water is incredibly dense because of the amount of dissolved salts. You float on top of the water, similar to a cork, no matter what size or shape you are.
What is a float room?
A float room, also known as a sensory deprivation or isolation room, is a 6’ wide X 8’ long X 7’ high room with a large access door for entry, and filled with about 10 inches of water and around 1,100 lbs of high pharmaceutical grade Epsom salt, allowing the user to escape the effects of gravity and float like a cork. The water is heated to skin temperature (93.5°F). Our float rooms are totally enclosed producing a light and sound proof environment. Floating has been commonly described as similar to relaxing in outer space or being back in the womb. It is like no other experience in the world!
Is the water sanitary?
Absolutely. The water in the float room will most likely be the most pristine you have ever been in. Floaters shower before and after going in, and the 1,100 lbs of Epsom salt acts as an active anti-bacterial, killing bacteria completely. Our state of the art water purification system filters the water a minimum of seven times between each session. Each time, the water is passed through a 5 micron filter, followed by both UV light and ozone technology to purify and disinfect the water. Small amounts of hydrogen peroxide are maintained (80-120 PPM), and natural enzymes are used to eat up oils.
What if I've experienced claustrophobia before?
Know that there are no expectations for your float. The thought of being in a dark space can be frightening to some. Our float rooms are large enough to stand up in. You are more than welcome to float with the door open and lights on the whole time if you please. Even when closed, the float room door is not locked, and you can easily open it and come out at any time. You are in total control the entire time.
Can I suffocate?
The lid is not airtight, and there are vents so fresh airflow is constant. It is pretty much impossible to roll over during a float.
Can two people float at the same time?
Our floats are designed to be an individual experience.
Do you wear anything in the float room?
Nothing but your birthday suit! Clothing against the skin may interfere with your experience and contaminate the water as clothing may also carry unwanted bacteria.
I've never been able to float before, I usually sink. Will I be able to float?
Yes, no matter size or weight, everyone is able to float. This is due to the high Epsom salt concentration which pushes you upward, making you float like a cork. As you lay back, the water will reach the temples; leaving your eyes, nose and mouth fully exposed to the air. For some perspective, ocean water is 3% saturated with salt, our float room is 35% saturated. Just lie back and relax.
Are there any contraindications for Float Therapy?
We encourage clients to check with their doctor when beginning any new health regimen, such as flotation. However, Float Therapy is safe for just about everyone! However, those with epileptic conditions or who have kidney disease (as the kidneys are responsible for processing magnesium) should take extra precautions in consulting their physician before floating.
Can I float while pregnant?
Yes! In fact, pregnant clients may experience some of the greatest relief from floating physically and mentally. The added weight and pressure on the mother’s body is likely to cause pain and discomfort, the weightless impact of floating can provide much relief! Many clients report a unique and memorable experience floating while pregnant.
Are there any side-effects?
Rarely, clients may experience nausea. This is typically indicative of a detox reaction responding to stress—which is often held in the stomach. Ultimately, releasing this stress is beneficial—though it may be uncomfortable at that moment. While this level of nausea is fairly uncommon, we do ask that guests exit the pod if they believe they may get sick. Flotation is powerful; please remember to drink plenty of water after your session!
Can I safely fall asleep?
Most definitely and many people do fall asleep while floating as a result of being so relaxed and over stressed. Studies show that one hour of sleep while floating is equivalent to four hours of sleep in your bed. We encourage clients to relax and release any worries of dozing off while floating. Each float room contains just 10 inches of highly salinized water and this solution supports you no matter how you might toss and turn in the Float Pod. It is extremely difficult to accidentally flip onto your belly in the room. If this occurred the extremely high salt concentration (1,000 lbs) immediately causes discomfort in the eyes, nose and mouth.
Will my skin wrinkle?
The high level of Epsom salts in each float room actually prevents the skin from wrinkling! It will, however, leave your skin silky smooth.
What if I get salt in my eyes?
It happens to the best of us. You can avoid this momentary discomfort by not touching your face with your hands during your session. However, if salt finds its way into your eyes, we do provide a squirt bottle full of fresh water in each float room, as well as a face towel to aid in cleanings your eyes.
Will I have Epsom salt stuck in my ears?
Only if you neglect to rinse your ears thoroughly after your session. Earplugs are provided to minimize this potential and reduce outside sounds.
Does floatation have other names?
Yes: Float Rooms, Sensory Deprivation room, Float room, Floatation room, and Isolation Chamber.
Do I shower before using the float room?
Yes. Showering before entering the float room to eliminate personal products and other contaminates. Using the shower afterward is also suggested to remove the coating of Epsom salt that is left on the skin and hair.
How long do sessions last?
Our minimum float is 60 minutes and you can add to your float in additional 30 minutes increments. For individuals interested in overnight floats, special arrangements can be made.
Should I eat before floating?
A heavy meal beforehand is not suggested, however you don’t want to hear your stomach growling. Also avoid caffeine before floating for it may interfere with your ability to relax.
What is Epsom salt?
Epsom salt is a pure and natural mineral compound composed of magnesium and sulfate. We use only the highest quality salt (pharmaceutical grade Epsom salt). Epsom salt can be easily dissolved in water, and is readily absorbed by the skin as a remedy for a number of ailments. The salt concentration makes the water extremely dense, and gives it the anti-gravity effects.
What are the benefits of Epsom salt in the floatation water?
Like the mineral-rich Dead Sea, the Epsom salt used in floatation rooms draw toxins to the surface of your skin, giving your body a powerful detoxification. They help to strengthen your immune system, trigger the release of endorphins, and reduce the level of harmful biochemicals in your body. They also provide great relief from mental and physical stress, fatigue, chronic pain, headaches, and arthritis.
What if I wear contact lenses?
Be sure to bring your cleaning kit so you can safely store your contact lenses while in the float room.
Will I drown in the float room if I fall asleep?
The depth of the solution is about 10 inches and the density of the solution is such that it will always support you, regardless of your size or weight. If you were to turn over, the salt in the water would sting your eyes and your nasal passageway and wake you, so drowning is not possible. Since you are floating you do not need to know how to swim. Additionally it’s not dangerous to fall asleep in the room, actually; it’s even encouraged to fall asleep in the floatation room – one hour of delta sleep in the float room is equivalent to four hours of very deep sleep in your bed.
How many times do I need to float to feel results?
One million times! Just kidding… The benefits of floating will happen even with only one float. As with all therapies, the more you float the greater the results Expect to go 2-3 times before you can really notice the feeling and difference that floating can make. We are working on getting a million floats under our belt and we’d love to help you too!
How will I feel after floating?
That is a difficult question to answer. Each person’s experiences are different, vary greatly and very individualized. Nearly every client reports having a sense of peace and relaxation, deep concentration and creativity. We like to avoid saying too much before you float so that you aren’t influenced by our experiences. You most likely won’t be in a rush to go anywhere, which is fine with us. You can hang out in our post float relaxation area and enjoy your personal post float bliss. You can sip on some of our wonderful hot tea, make some doodles in a sketchbook, or just continue to do nothing.
Are there situations in which I will not be permitted to use the flotation room?
We will not allow you to float if you have any of the following conditions:
- Infectious skin or respiratory disorders
- Open wounds
- Epilepsy or serious mental conditions
- A high-risk pregnancy
- Have colored or permed your hair within 3 days
- Under the influence of any drug or alcohol
- Under 18 without parental presence
We expect you to inform us of any conditions for your own safety and the safety of other floaters! We reserve the right to refuse service to anyone at any time.
Can I float if I just dyed my hair?
While there is no guarantee that the salt won’t strip some color from your hair, we recommend that you check if the water running through your hair in the shower at home is fully clear and that it has been a minimum of three days since you dyed your hair. If there is still some color coming out you should wait a couple of more days/showers.
